Football Looks to Extend Its Winning Ways at Mars Hill on Saturday
After finally posting back-to-back win for the first time this season, the Catawba football team will be out to make it three in a row as they travel to Mars Hill on Saturday. The Indians are coming off wins over UNC Pembroke and Brevard, while the Lions had a two-game winning streak snapped with a loss to #5 Lenoir-Rhyne last weekend. The teams may have to battle some elements on Saturday as the forecast calls for temperatures in the mid-30s and a chance of snow.
Catawba held off Brevard last week, winning 42-37. Quarterback Mike Sheehan ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more in the win. He completed all 13 of his pass attempts. On the ground, running backs David Burgess and Trey Mashore both went over 100 yards, setting career highs. Mashore had 101 of his 120 yards in the opening half, while Burgess tallied 94 of his 137 yards in half number two. Burgess ran for a score and caught a 53-yard TD pass.
Sheehan is turning in one of the best season by a Catawba quarterback. His 1733 yards passing already ranks among the top 15 seasons in school history and his 14 touchdown passes are one short of a top 10 spot. The sophomore is completing 63.4% of his passes which is currently only to Danny O’Brien’s school record of 68% last year.
Burgess and Cary Littlejohn are both closing in on 1,000 career rushing yards. Littlejohn needs 72 yards and Burgess is 126 yards shy of the mark. On defense, Jason Taylor has reached 300 career tackles, becoming just the seventh player to record that many stops.
Mars Hill held a 10-7 lead over Lenoir-Rhyne after a quarter last week, but by the end of the third quarter the Bears were up 45-10. Mars Hill ran for 177 yards, but went just 12-of-30 in the air for 143 yards. All of the 585 yards by the Bears came on the ground.
Jamel Harbison has been the offensive punch for Mars Hill this season. He is averaging 128 yards a game. He totaled 53 yards on five carries with a 19-yard TD on the opening drive against Lenoir-Rhyne before leaving with an injury.
Dimitri Holmes is one of the top wide outs in the league. He has 40 receptions on the year and has caught five of the nine touchdown passes for the Lions. Quarterback Trent Miller is hitting on just under 53% of his passes for 1226 yards and six scores.
Catawba leads the series with Mars Hill 29-23 and won 10 straight in the series from 1996-2005. The teams have went 4-4 against each other since then with four of the last five meeting being decided by a touchdown or less.
Last year, Catawba rallied with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to win 38-31. O’Brien’s four-yard run with just under three minutes left put the Indians ahead. Littlejohn ran for 86 yards for Catawba. O’Brien threw for 311 yards and three scores.
