Indians Second Half Surge Leads to 4-2 Victory Over Mars Hill
MARS HILL, N.C. -- The Catawba College women’s soccer team closed out its regular season Friday night when they downed Mars Hill 4-2 in South Atlantic Conference action at Meares Stadium. Freshmen Kate Wiesner, Kiersten Peck and Hannah Cruse accounted for four goals and two assists in the victory. Catawba improves to 10-6-2 overall with the win and 6-4-1 in the SAC. With the loss Mars Hill falls to 0-16-1 and 0-11, respectively.
Cruse drew first blood in the game with a header off a Peck corner kick in the 28th minute. Mars Hill would respond a few minutes later to send the game into halftime tied at one.
Halfway through the second half Kate Weisner would score her first of two goals on the night thanks to a long ball from junior Alex Hulsey. Peck and Cruse would team up a second time to record the game winner in the 73rd minute. Cruse would serve up the assist this time with a lob over the defender and Peck outran the keeper to score. Hulsey would setup Weisner once again in the 80th minute to seal the win.
The Lady Indians outshot Mars Hill by a 26-7 margin. Mars Hill goalie, Tori Stajduhar recorded ten saves in the process but succeeded four goals. Catawba keeper Bethany Davis made three saves on the way to her tenth win of the year in goal.
Catawba will look next to the South Atlantic Conference tournament opening round Wednesday November 4. Catawba is secured to place between 5th and 7th position depending on the results of Tusculum and Queens.
