Indians Blank Top Ranked Mars Hill 1-0 To Close Season
MARS HILL, N.C. -- The Catawba College men’s soccer team completed its 2014 season with a 1-0 upset over the South Atlantic Conference leader Mars Hill Friday night at Meares Stadium. The Indians finish their season with a 6-9-2 record and 3-6-2 in the SAC. Mars Hill will go on to host in the opening round of the conference tournament with a 8-7 record and 8-3 in conference.
The lone goal came in the 74th minute when Michael Basnett used his speed to create the opportunity for Catawba from 20 yards out. Bradley Dowdall was credited with the assist.
Catawba goalie, Christian Watts made five saves on the way to his sixth shutout of the season. Mars Hill’s Oliver Pannell faced only two shots on goal and saved one.
Despite the loss Mars Hill held a 24-8 shot advantage over the Indians. The game became very physical when four yellow cards were called over the final five minutes of the match.
