Volleyball Drops Four-Setter at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C -- Catawba was knocked off in four sets by host Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.  The Wolves moved to 14-13 overall and 8-11 in the SAC with the 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-11 win.  The Catawba Indians, who were officially eliminated from contention for a SAC Tournament spot, fell to 6-20 and 4-16.

Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) collected nine kills to pace Catawba.   Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) followed with seven kills and also added 13 digs and two aces.  Freshman Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS) handed out 28 assists and libero Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, N.C./S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) posted 19 digs.

Newberry got 13 kills and three blocks from Jessica King in the win.  Alexus Horton recorded eight blocks and Holly Brisson five as the Wolves posted 13 as a team.  Rachel Moran served up seven of the team's 10 aces.

Each team enjoyed runs in the opening set.  Newberry got off to a 9-5 lead then saw Catawba grab a 15-12 edge after two kills each from Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) and Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) to cap an 8-1 run.  The Wolves bounced back to go up 20-16 and were ahead 24-20 before Catawba rallied back.

A combo block from Morant and Gallup started the push and Morant combined with Stanford on a block to make it 24-23.  Gallup killed off two points to give the Lady Indians a 25-24 lead, but Horton blocked a point for Newberry to tie the set.  After a hitting error by Catawba, Amanda Soper posted a kill to end the set.

Catawba led early in set two as the Lady Indians took a 15-9 lead following a kill from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS).  Two kills by Howard put Catawba on top 18-12, but the Wolves scored the next seven points, two on blocks from Horton, to go up 19-18.  The teams stayed within a point until Newberry scored the final two points of the set on Catawba errors.

The Lady Indians took a big lead in set three, holding a 14-5 edge after a kill from Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, N.C./N. Henderson HS).  Newberry came all the way back to tie the set at 21-all before Catawba won the set with  the final three points.  Howard kills off the first point, the second came on a combo block by Frabotta and Abby Pennington (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg HS) and the last on a Newberry hitting error.

Newberry took the late momentum into the fourth set and jumped out to an 11-2 lead.  A kill from Pennington got the Lady Indians within 12-6 before Newberry put the match away.  An 8-0 run included four straight aces from Moran to give the hosts a 21-7 lead.  Brittany Tolbert killed off the match point.

Catawba will conclude its season with a pair of home matches at Goodman Gym this coming week.  The Lady Indians will face Queens on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and end the season on Friday night at 7 p.m. vs. Brevard.
