Women Fall In Elon Exhibition 92-49
ELON, N.C. -- The NCAA Division I Elon Phoenix were too much to handle for the Catawba College women’s basketball team in a 92-49 exhibition loss Sunday evening at Alumni Gym. Catawba is currently 0-2 this year in exhibition play with the previous loss coming to another division I school in Davidson.
Turnovers played a key issue in the loss for Catawba as they finished the game with 29, most coming from passes into a physical Elon post. Elon finshed the contest with 17 turnovers.
Both teams struggled to make the first basket until Elon’s Sam Coffer hit a three 2:42 into the game. Elon would extend to a 7-0 lead before Catawba’s Emma Ucinski could respond with a three pointer of her own at the fifteen minute mark.
Late in the first half Catawba would go into a four minute drought with Elon adding 14 unanswered points in the process. Elon would go into halftime with a 45-17 lead.
In the second half the Indians didn’t fare much better than the first with trouble coming from a tough Elon post. Elon held a 47-44 rebounding margin and ten blocks in the process.
Zhaquondalee Greer led the Indians on the night scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Terri Rogers and Bri Johnson would add eight points of their own in the process.
Elon had three double-digit scorers in Shay Burnett, Zora Stephenson and Malaya Johnson with 21, 18 and 14 points respectively. Stephenson would add nine rebounds in the win and Johnson contributed eight of her own.
Catawba will travel next to Charlotte to play the 49ers on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
