Twelve Service Aces Spark Volleyball to Sweep of Queens
SALISBURY, N.C -- Catawba got favorable returns on election night with a three-set sweep of visiting Queens in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians snapped a four-match losing streak, winning by the scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-18 in improving to 7-20 overall and 5-16 in the SAC. The Royals fall to 6-23 and 3-17.
The Lady Indians got nine kills from Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, N.C./N. Henderson HS) and six each from Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) and Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) in cruising to the win. Catawba never trailed in the match and got 22 free points from 12 aces and 10 Queens service errors.
The Lady Indians scored the first five points of the opening set, two coming on aces by McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS). Queens rallied back within 6-5, but Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) served two aces in another five point Catawba run to make it 11-5. The closest Queens got from there was 15-11 before the Lady Indians put the set away with a 9-3 surge.
Catawba jumped out 4-0 in set two and led 8-1 after an ace from Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS). The early lead grew to 14-5. The Royals rallied back and cut the deficit to 19-15 then saw Catawba reel off four points, two on kills from Brown. Howard and Brown killed off the final two points of the set.
The Lady Indians raced to a 9-3 lead in the final set and were up 14-5 before Queens got back into the set. Katie Schoenrock sparked the Royals with consecutive kills the pulled the visitors within 16-13. A service error was followed by another Stanford ace as Catawba pulled back out to a 21-14 lead. Brown and Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek HS) ended the match with a combo block.
Elizabeth Bialkowski led the Royals with nine kills. Schoenrock and Meredith Jones each had six kills. Alex Thompson collected three blocks, while Megan Mancini recorded 14 digs.
Garrison, Stanford, Furr and Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) each served two aces for Catawba. Stanford also had 19 assists and a pair of blocks. Libero Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, N.C./S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) posted 12 digs.
Catawba finishes up its season on Friday night, hosting Brevard at 7 p.m.
