Women's Soccer Place Three on All-Conference Second Team
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Catawba College placed three players on the 2014 women’s soccer All-Conference team as announced by the South Atlantic Conference office Wednesday afternoon.
Kate Weisner (Apex, N.C/Middlecreek) claimed second team honors at forward as a freshman. Weisner finished with 11 goals in the regular season, a mark which ranked fourth in the conference. The freshman also added an assist against Lees-McRae to give her 23 points on the year.
Another Catawba freshman, Erin Feldman (Charlotte, N.C./Olympic), earned second team honors as a defender. Feldman has been an anchor to the Catawba defense helping the Indians to six shutouts and a 1.33 goals against average. In the opening match of the season on September 5th Feldman recorded her only assist of the season with a long ball to teammate Becky Frost.
Bethany Davis (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) tied with Wingate University’s Ashlyn Hardie for the second team goalkeeper position. The junior recorded 72 saves in the regular season and tallied three shutouts in the process. Davis bolstered a 10-2-2 record in net this year despite missing three games to a minor injury.
Wingate forward Jade Montgomery was voted the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year, while Anderson’s Lyssa Engle was voted the Conference’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, Newberry mentor Deedee Sanguinetti was tabbed the Coach of the Year.
Montgomery, a senior from Monroe N.C., becomes the first player in South Atlantic Conference history to earn three-straight Player of the Year honors after finishing the season ranked in the top 10 in the nation in four offensive categories. She is currently No. 5 in Division II with 1.0 goals per contest, while her 2.33 points per game is good for No. 7 in the nation. She posted 15 goals on the season to rank No. 7 in the country to go along with 35 points to rank No. 8 in Division II. A two-time All-American, Montgomery earned NSCAA Disney Soccer National Player of the Week honors after finishing the week with five scores, including a hat trick against Coker on Oct. 8. She scored three multi-goal games this season and turned in a League-best 11 goals in South Atlantic Conference play. Montgomery is the reigning NCAA Southeast Region Player of the Year.
Engle, a forward from Fairborn, Ohio, finished in the top five in the South Atlantic Conference in four offensive categories. She is currently No. 4 in the SAC with 0.64 goals per outing and is fourth in the Conference with 1.35 points per game. Engle pounded in 11 goals on the 2014 campaign to rank No. 4 in the League and her 23 points was good for No. 4 in the Conference as well. She was named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week after turning in five goals, including four scores in the win over Mars Hill on Sept. 27.
Sanguinetti coached her squad to an 8-2-1 South Atlantic Conference record and a 10-3-4 record overall and the No. 3 seed in the 2014 SAC Women’s Soccer Championship. Newberry posted one of the biggest turnarounds in the League after finishing the 2013 season as the eighth seed in the tournament. One of the top defensive teams in the SAC, Sanguinetti’s Wolves lead the Conference with an .853 save percentage. Her squad is second in the Conference with a .563 shutout percentage and is second in the Conference with a .656 goals-against average.
