49ers Press Their Way To a 93-64 Win Over Catawba
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Catawba College women’s basketball team took on the Charlotte 49ers and fell 93-64 in exhibition play Wednesday night at Halton Arena. The 49ers were led by sophomore Lefty Webster who drained 21 points in the win.
Guard play proved to be the ultimate demise for the Indians as the Charlotte backcourt held an advantage in both size and speed. The Catawba Lady Indians hung tough through the first half being down as much as 19 points before rallying to as close as seven points. Charlotte would extend the lead back to 13 to enter halftime with a 44-31 lead.
Charlotte came out in the second half with a full court press that was too much for the Catawba guards to handle. The lead extended to 24 points by the first media timeout.
Junior Khadijah Brown led the Lady Indians in scoring with 14 points and added six rebounds in the process. South Atlantic all-conference performer Chloe Bully aided with 11 points in the game which included two shots from long range.
Freshman Serena Brown played well in the match scoring nine points and dishing out six assists from the point guard position. Bri Johnson came off the bench to come close to a double-double night with nine points and seven rebounds.
Charlotte had five players score double digits on the night with 27 points coming off the bench. Despite benefitting from a large difference in height the 49ers only held a 43-36 rebounding advantage.
Catawba looks to open its regular season on Friday as the Lady Indians take on Mount Olive. The game is the first of four in a South Atlantic Conference vs. Conference Carolinas tournament hosted by Queens University. Catawba’s match is slated for 6:00 p.m. The Indians will play again on Saturday against Barton at 2:00 p.m.
