Lady Indians Still In the Hunt After Recent Regional Rankings
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The NCAA offices announced its new regional rankings Wednesday afternoon which placed the Catawba College women’s soccer team in seventh place for the Southeast Region. Six teams will advance to regional play which includes three automatic qualifiers for conference tournament champions.
The Southeast region is made up of the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt Conference and Conference Carolinas. Conference Carolinas currently does not have anyone in the top ten of the regional rankings but will benefit from the automatic qualifier that is awarded to the conference tournament champion.
Columbus State, out of the Peach Belt Conference, currently holds the top regional spot. North Georgia and Armstrong also hail from the Peach Belt and rank third and fourth place respectively in the rankings. In the conference tournament Columbus State will host UNC Pembroke in the semifinals. Pembroke currently sits right behind Catawba in the rankings in eighth. North Georgia will also compete in the semifinals against Clayton State who currently sits tenth in the regional rankings. Armstrong lost in the first round to Clayton State which will factor into the next ranking release.
The South Atlantic conference boasts the remaining three positions in the rankings with Lenoir-Rhyne (2nd), Wingate (5th) and Newberry (6th). The Catawba Lady Indians sit just on the outside in seventh place. All four teams remain alive the in South Atlantic Conference Tournament which continues Friday at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. Catawba will face the top ranked Lenoir-Rhyne while Wingate and Newberry face off in the semifinals.
