Baseball drops two of three to WingateWINGATE, NC -- Wingate claimed two wins over visiting Catawba during a three-game South Atlantic Conference baseball series over the weekend at Christopher Stadium. Catawba earned a 7-1 win on Saturday, while the Bulldogs took both ends of Sunday’s doubleheader, winning 5-1 and 6-4. Catawba now stands at 16-11 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while Wingate is 13-12 and 4-2. SUNDAY Game one - Wingate 5, Catawba 1 Wingate freshman right-hander Eric Brown (Hamlet, NC) pitched his first collegiate complete game to lead the Bulldogs to the victory. Brown struck out eight and walked only one, allowing one run on five hits. Sophomore infielder Jon Svanda (Chesterfield, VA) was 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and three RBI for the victors. Svanda hit his first collegiate home run in the second inning (a two-run blast) to give Wingate a 3-0 lead. Brown would not need any more support. The Indians scored their lone run in the final inning on a RBI single by Chris Foy (Burlington, NC). The Tribe would load the bases with two outs, but Scott Searles (Boston, MA) struck out to end the contest. Game two - Wingate 6, Catawba 4 Wingate broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pick up the win. The win marked victories in five of the last six games for the Tribe. Snyder struck out eight Wingate batters and walked none. He leads the league with 57 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched this season. Indian senior second baseman Blair Reynolds (King, NC) led off the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season. After the two teams experienced a 30-minute rain delay, Hill laced an RBI double to right center, scoring Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC), who had walked earlier in the inning. Catawba's two runs in fourth inning were the only earned runs Wingate's pitching staff allowed Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs committed five errors, leading to five unearned runs. The Indians scored twice in the sixth inning and three times in the seventh inning. In the sixth inning, Catawba stayed alive following a strikeout when junior outfielder Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) reached on a passed ball on the third strike. One Catawba run scored on an error on the same play. Later in the inning, Reynolds drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded. Southard added an RBI single in the seventh inning.
