Baseball drops two of three to Wingate

WINGATE, NC -- Wingate claimed two wins over visiting Catawba during a three-game South Atlantic Conference baseball series over the weekend at Christopher Stadium. Catawba earned a 7-1 win on Saturday, while the Bulldogs took both ends of Sunday’s doubleheader, winning 5-1 and 6-4. Catawba now stands at 16-11 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while Wingate is 13-12 and 4-2. SUNDAY Game one - Wingate 5, Catawba 1 Wingate freshman right-hander Eric Brown (Hamlet, NC) pitched his first collegiate complete game to lead the Bulldogs to the victory. Brown struck out eight and walked only one, allowing one run on five hits. Sophomore infielder Jon Svanda (Chesterfield, VA) was 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and three RBI for the victors. Svanda hit his first collegiate home run in the second inning (a two-run blast) to give Wingate a 3-0 lead. Brown would not need any more support. The Indians scored their lone run in the final inning on a RBI single by Chris Foy (Burlington, NC). The Tribe would load the bases with two outs, but Scott Searles (Boston, MA) struck out to end the contest. Game two - Wingate 6, Catawba 4 Wingate broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pick up the win. In the fateful fourth, Catawba tied the game with three runs in the top of the frame. In the bottom of the inning, Wingate scored one run on a wild pitch and another on an errant pick-off throw. Two Wingate freshmen relievers came up big for the Bulldogs. Chad Yow (Stanfield, NC) got his first collegiate win, pitching 1 1/3 innings of two-hit ball. He struck out three and walked two. Fellow frosh Matt Trent (Roanoke, VA) got his first collegiate save, pitching two innings of one-hit relief. Trent struck out five and walked one. On offense, Wingate junior outfielder Andrew Brockington (Florence, SC) was 2-for-4 with two RBI. For Catawba, senior shortstop Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) was two-for-three with two RBI. Hill had his seventh double of the season in the Indian fourth inning, plating two runs to tie the score. SATURDAY Catawba 7, Wingate 1 Catawba collected a rain-soaked 7-1 win over Wingate University Saturday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium. The win marked victories in five of the last six games for the Tribe. Catawba junior pitcher Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC), now 5-1 overall, pitched his first complete game of the season, scattering eight hits and allowing only one run. Snyder struck out eight Wingate batters and walked none. He leads the league with 57 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched this season. Indian senior second baseman Blair Reynolds (King, NC) led off the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season. After the two teams experienced a 30-minute rain delay, Hill laced an RBI double to right center, scoring Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC), who had walked earlier in the inning. Catawba's two runs in fourth inning were the only earned runs Wingate's pitching staff allowed Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs committed five errors, leading to five unearned runs. The Indians scored twice in the sixth inning and three times in the seventh inning. In the sixth inning, Catawba stayed alive following a strikeout when junior outfielder Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) reached on a passed ball on the third strike. One Catawba run scored on an error on the same play. Later in the inning, Reynolds drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded. Southard added an RBI single in the seventh inning. The Indians scored three runs on three hits and two Bulldog errors in the seventh frame. Hill was two-for-six with a double and one RBI for the victors. He was the only Catawba with multiple hits. The Indians had only seven hits. Three Wingate pitchers issued 13 walks to Catawba batters. Wingate junior outfielder Andrew Connor (Randleman, NC) was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
