Volleyball Closes Out Season With a Tough Five-Set Loss to Brevard
SALISBURY, N.C -- For the second time this season Brevard posted a five-set win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. The visiting Tornados took Friday night’s win at Goodman Gym by the scores of 12-25, 25-12, 23-25, 25-20 and 16-14 to improve to 11-17 overall and 5-16 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians finish up its season at 7-21 and 5-17.
Fatima Gharachorloo (Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA) led Brevard with 14 kills and added 13 digs. Whitney DeMoss (Candler, N.C.) added 11 kills, while Rachel Ruble (Advance, N.C.) had nine kills and four blocks. Setter Erin Barr (Hamptonville, N.C.) handed out 44 assists with a pair of aces and libero Aleksandra Vrvilo (Beaverton, Ore.) recorded 24 digs and served three aces.
Catawba was led by senior Haley Lanier (Burgaw, N.C./Pender Co. HS), who delivered 14 kills and senior Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, N.C./N. Henderson HS), who had seven kills and three blocks. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) had 30 assists, 11 digs, two aces and seven kills.
The teams split easy wins in the first two sets. Catawba used a 15-4 run in the opener set to go up 22-11. Lanier had four kills in the run. The Lady Indians got the final points on a kill and ace by Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) and a kill from Abby Pennington (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg HS). Brevard had a 13-4 run in set two to lead 19-10. Vrvilo had two of her aces in the run.
Catawba rallied back from a 14-9 deficit in the third set. An ace by Frabotta sparked a 7-2 run that pulled the Lady Indians even at 16-all on a kill from Lanier. With the set tied at 23-all, Catawba took the lead on a kill from Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS) and won the set on a Tornado hitting error.
Brevard zoomed to an 8-1 lead in the fourth set. Catawba battled back and went on top 14-11 after an ace from Frabotta. The Tornados responded with a 7-0 run that was capped by three kills from Kindle Kirkham (Sheridan, Wyo.). Catawba pulled with 21-20 on a kill from Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS), but Brevard scored the final four points.
The Tornados jumped to a 6-3 lead in the deciding set, getting two kills each from DeMoss and Gharachorloo. Catawba was down 10-6 after an ace from Vrvilo, but came back to tie the set on a solo block from Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek HS) at 12-all. Brevard scored on a Catawba error and a kill by Savannah Cox (Kannapolis, N.C.) to lead 14-12 then saw Catawba rally on a Tornado error and a kill from Morant. Gharachorloo gave Brevard another match point on a kill and Barr served an ace to close it out.
Two other seniors joined Lanier and Brown in closing out their collegiate careers for Catawba. Pennington picked up five kills and a block, while libero Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, N.C./S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) collected 12 digs.
