Men's Basketball Opens Season at Home on Friday in SAC/PBC Challenge
The Catawba men’s basketball team will play its first official game under new head coach Rob Perron on Friday night as part of the SAC/PBC Challenge at 8 pm at Goodman Gym. The first game of the night will feature Lenoir-Rhyne against UNC Pembroke at 6 pm. Catawba will follow with a game against Francis Marion. Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne will switch opponents for Saturday action which will also be at 6 and 8 pm.
Catawba played an exhibition game with UNC Wilmington last Saturday and although the final score was 97-68 in favor of UNCW, the Indians trailed only 45-43 at the half. The Catawba Indians placed four players in double figures with freshman Jerrin Morrison posting a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Delaware State transfer Rakeen Brown led Catawba with 13 points.
Friday will mark the seventh meeting with Francis Marion in basketball and one team will walk away with the series lead as each team has won three of the previous six encounters. The last meeting of the schools on the hardwood came back in the 2003-04 season with the Patriots claiming both wins that year.
Francis Marion was picked 11th among the 14 Peach Belt schools in the preseason coaches poll, while Catawba was tabbed 11th of 12 in the SAC. Among the key returnees for the Patriots are 5-10 senior guard David Brown (3.5 ppg, 2.0 apg), 6-4 senior guard Trevonte Dixon (6.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg), and 6-7 senior forward Luka Zivkovic (5.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg). Coach Gary Edwards enters the tournament with 499 career wins as a collegiate head coach.
On Saturday, Catawba will tangle with UNC Pembroke. The Braves were picked seventh in the preseason conference poll and are led by preseason All-PBC selection Quamain Rose. Rose was the 2012-13 PBC Freshman of the Year and led the league in steals. He averaged 15.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game last year.
UNC Pembroke is coming off a 72-71 exhibition win over Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday. Rose snapped a tie on a free throw with two seconds left. Griffin Pittman led the Braves with 16 points with Rose adding 13.
Catawba and UNCP have met 35 previous times in basketball with the Indians holding a 22-13 edge all-time. The Braves won 77-58 in Pembroke two years ago in the most recent meeting. That was the first matchup between the schools since the late 1980s.
