Jordan-Steele/Boles Lead Catawba at Regionals
Montevallo, Ala. -- Catawba College’s Matthew Jordan-Steele finished in 59th place to lead all Catawba runners Saturday morning in the NCAA DII Cross Country Southeast Regional Championship hosted by Montevallo University. Erica Boles was the highest placed women’s runner for Catawba in 115th position.
Jordan-Steele’s time of 35:01 was over three and a half minutes behind the men’s 10k winner, Ahmad Nesbitt from North Greenville University. Nesbitt finished in a time of 31:23.11. Clayton State’s Job Kemboi finished in second place in 31:33.
Nathan Hatley was the second fastest Catawba runner with a 80th place time of 35:36. Jonathon Boles rounded out the Catawba men with a time of 42:43 for 163rd position. Both Hatley and Jordan-Steele improved from last year’s race by almost 40 positions for each.
The Catawba men did not place in the team totals after a couple unforeseen incidents. One Catawba runner was unable to start the race after getting food poisoning the night before. Korby Chappell also could not finish the race after suffering an injury midway through. Mars Hill won the men’s team event with a 76 point total. Mount Olive came in second 18 markers behind.
For the women’s 6k race the event’s host, Montevallo, took the team victory with 60 points. North Georgia (90) finshed in second place followed by Wingate (91) and Queens (165) in third and fourth. Queens’ Catie Byrd and Megan Wright finished first and second in the race. Bryd recorded a time of 21:56 and Wright crossed the finish line in a time of 22:17.
Boles finished in a time of 26:11 for Catawba followed by freshman Jennifer Lomax’s 27:07 for 140th place. Devin Purvis (29:00) and Jordan Hunt (29:58) rounded out the Catawba women with 170 and 176 place finishes respectively.
