SALISBURY, N.C. -- Newberry got 25 points from Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Vic, Australia) and pulled out a 72-64 road win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Wolves, who are ranked 11th in the new D2SIDA national poll, improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 3-2 and 1-2.

Newberry jumped out quickly, leading 20-5 just over eight minutes into the contest.  Down 23-7, Catawba responded on a pair of jumpers by Zhaquondalee Greer (Greensboro, N.C./Academy at Smith/Charleston So.) and two three-pointers from Janna Dixon (Advance, N.C./W. Forsyth HS) to close the gap to 25-15 with 7:39 to go in the half.  The Wolves held a 28-19 edge, but did not score over the final 5:19 of the first half as Catawba clawed within a point at the break.

The Wolves finally ended its scoring draught 2:35 into the second half then tried to pull away, going ahead 46-35 with 11:40 left after a two baskets by Creed and two three-pointers from Zara Pearson (Echuca, Australia) in a 10-3 run.  The Lady Indians pulled back within three with seven straight points at 54-51 after a three-pointer and back-to-back layups by Chloe Bully (Hannut, Belgium/KOL Landen).

Newberry responded as Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, Australia) hit a jumper followed by back-to-back three’s by Creed and Emily Perry (Nambour, Australia) as the Wolves went up 11 with 1:58 remaining.  Catawba forced a pair of turnovers late to help cut a 10-point deficit to four with 21 seconds to play, but Newberry went 4-of-4 at the line from there to close the game out.

Dixon led Catawba with a career-high 17 points, hitting on five three-pointers.  Bully added 15 points and eight boards, while Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance HS) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Greer also reached double digits with 11 points.

Creed hit on 8-of-15 shots with four three pointers to lead the Wolves.  Perry added 18 points and Pearson a dozen on four three-pointers.  Newberry went 13-of-25 (52%) from long range.

Catawba returns to action on Saturday, hosting Pfeiffer at 2 p.m.
