Behind Early Spurt Women's Basketball Cruises Past Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba scored the first 15 points and cruised to a 63-46 win over visiting Pfeiffer in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 4-2. The Falcons fall to 2-2.
Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance HS) scored eight of Catawba’s first 10 points and finished with a team-high13 points and eight rebounds. Her two free throws at the 16:45 mark of the opening half gave the Lady Indians a double-figure lead and Pfeiffer never got within single digits the rest of the way.
The Lady Indians pushed its margin with a 12-0 run late in the first half. Three-pointers by Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell HS/Belmont Abbey) and Janna Dixon (Advance, N.C./W. Forsyth HS) during that run lifted Catawba to a 34-12 edge.
Pfeiffer trailed 36-19 at the break and shot a mere 19% (6-of-31) in the half. Catawba canned 44% in the opening stanza.
Johnson hit two baskets to start the second half for Catawba and following a three-point play from Rogers, Catawba was up 43-19 after just two and half minutes. The Lady Indians enjoyed their largest lead with 7:18 left at 57-31.
Johnson joined Rogers in double figures for Catawba with 10 points. Dixon and Chloe Bully (Hannut, Belgium/KOL Landen) each had eight. Bully grabbed six rebounds and had three steals.
Carter Williams paced Pfeiffer with 16 points. Meg Pritchard added nine points and seven rebounds. The Falcons shot just 27% for the game and were out-rebounded by a 53-33 margin.
Catawba will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to city rival Livingstone for a 7 pm tip.
