Softball earns sweep of St. AndrewsSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College swept a doubleheader from visiting St. Andrews in softball action at Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 10-5 and 3-2 in improving to 13-11 on the season. St. Andrews falls to 8-15. Catawba pounded out 14 hits and rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to take the opener. After falling behind 1-0 after and inning, St. Andrews got a solo home run from Tina Gonsalves in the second and added three more in the third. Gonslaves and Bethany Smith each singled home runs, while Brandy Ankney hit a sacrifice fly. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) reached on an error that started a four-run third as Catawba took a 5-4 lead. Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) had a key two-run single, while Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) also singled home a run. The Knights tied the score in the fourth, but Catawba added two runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to pull away. Jenn Ropp (Broadway, VA) collected three hits and had two RBI for Catawba, while Phelps was among four players with two hits and led the way with three RBI. Phelps also picked up the win on the mound, tossing four innings in relief and allowing no earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Gonsalves had two hits and two RBI for St. Andrews. Catawba got a RBI single from Ropp and a run on an error to grab a 2-0 lead after an inning of game two. Celeste Windham pulled the Knights within a run with a RBI single in the second, but Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) scored on a groundout by Stacey Handy in Catawba second for a 3-1 lead. St. Andrews would draw within a run on an error in the third, but after the error, Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) retired 13 of the next 14 Knight batters to earn the win and improve to 5-1. She scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Rhoades had two hits to lead the offense. Gonsalves and Windham each had a pair of hits for St. Andrews. #####
