FAIRFAX, Va. -- George Mason shot 67% for the game and downed visiting Catawba 99-69 in men's basketball action on Wednesday night at the Recreation Athletic Complex.  The game was an exhibition game for the Catawba Indians.  The Patriots, of the Atlantic 10, improve to 3-6.

George Mason shot over 65% in both halves, including 68% in the first half as it canned 19-of-28 shots.  Despite the hot shooting, Catawba stayed close as the Indians benefited from a dozen Patriot turnovers to trail just 45-37 at the break.

The Patriots never trailed and went up by double digits midway through the opening half.  The Indians trailed 32-20 with just over six minutes left in the half when they rallied to within five.  KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh HS/Henry CC) started a 7-0 run on a three-point play and followed it with a steal and layup.  GMU spurted back out by 10 and settled for the eight-point margin after 20 minutes.

The Indians stayed within striking distance early in the second half before George Mason pulled away from a 13-point lead over the final 12 minutes.  After hitting on 42% in the opening half, Catawba canned just 29% in the second stanza.  The Indians were also cold from long range, making just 1-of-14 from behind the arc.

Arrington led Catawba with 17 points.  Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va./Bethel HS/Delaware St.) followed with 16 points and grabbed six rebounds.  Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, Lithuania/North Hills) also reached double figures with 10 points.

Patriot center Shevon Thompson had a big night for George Mason.  He posted a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds.  Thompson hit on 13-of-15 field goal attempts and also blocked three shots.  The Patriots had 13 blocks as a team.

George Mason put six players in double figures.  Isaiah Jackson tossed in 14 points and Marko Gujanicic scored a dozen.  Marquise Moore and Trey Porter each tallied 11 points with Patrick Holloway posting 10 points.  The Patriots had a big advantage near the basket, outscoring Catawba 70-44 in the paint.

Catawba will close its pre-Christmas schedule at J.C. Smith on Saturday afternoon with a 4 pm tipoff.
