CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Catawba men's basketball team dropped its final game before Christmas, falling 102-89 to host Johnson C. Smith at Brayboy Gym on Saturday afternoon.  Freshman Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg HS) scored a game-high 25 points to pace the Catawba Indians, who fall to 5-4.  The Golden Bulls placed six players in double figures in moving to 6-5 on the year.

Catawba led for most of the opening half before a late JC Smith run gave control to the Golden Bulls.  The Indians were up 37-31 with five minutes left in the first half before Smith used a 16-3 run over the final 4:38 to lead 47-40 at the break.

Markell Lotharp, who came off the bench to lead the Golden Bulls with 21 points, scored eight points in the crucial surge.  Joshua Linson added two of his three pointers on the night and finished with 13 points.  JCSU shot 56% in the half, while Catawba made just over 40%.  The Indians also had four of its 10 first-half turnovers in those final minutes.

The Indians fell behind by 10 early in the second half, but four straight points from Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va./Bethel HS/Delaware St.)  and a three-pointer by Morrison cut the deficit to 55-52 with 15:10 remaining.  The Golden Bulls answered that run with seven straight points of their own and stayed ahead by six the rest of the way.

Morrison canned 10-of-20 shots for Catawba which included three makes from behind the arc.  He also grabbed six boards.  Brown collected 18 points with three assists and five rebounds for the Indians.  KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh HS/Henry CC) added 12 points and five boards, while Troy Warren (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman HS) totaled 10 points and posted six rebounds.

For Smith, Lotharp scored his team-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting.  Raston Brown posted 14 points and Diondre Pratt joined Linson with 13 points.  Stedmon Lemon and Emilo Parks scored 10 each.  Robert Davis III handed out 14 assists and Alandre Davis blocked six shots.

The Golden Bulls didn't cool off after the break, shooting nearly 60% in the final half.  JCSU finished the game at 57% and canned five-of-12 (42%) from long range.  Catawba hit 45% for the contest, but struggled from three-point range, making only 8-of-25 (32%).  Catawba did hold a +10 margin on the boards, but had six more turnovers.

Catawba returns to action on New Year's Eve, traveling to Erskine for a 4 pm tip on December 31st in Due West, S.C.
