Indians Fall Late to Newberry in SAC Action
NEWBERRY, S.C. -- A second half surge lifted Newberry College to a 64-60 win over the Catawba College Lady Indians in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena. With the win Newberry improves to 9-4 on the season and 5-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Catawba falls to 6-6 and 3-4, respectively.
Jada Huntley led the Lady Indians to a first half lead of 33-24 after tallying 15 points and 12 rebounds in the half.
Catawba would extend to as large as 13 points before Newberry mounted a comeback late in the second half. Samantha Creed led the Newberry comeback scoring 25 points and adding six assists. Catawba held a seven point advantage with 4:17 left on the clock before Newberry went on an 8-0 to take the lead at 57-56. Creed finished in the final four minutes scoring 12 of the final 15 points.
Huntley led Catawba in both scoring and rebounding with 21 apiece. Catawba finished the game with a 40-32 advantage on the boards.
Catawba finished the night shooting 23-for-64 (35.9%) from the field and 3-of-16 (18.8%) from behind the arc. Catawba scored 11-of-14 (78.6%) from the free throw line.
Newberry shot 24-for-50 (48%) overall and 5-for-14 (35.7%) from three point range. The Wolves also went 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.
Catawba will return home on Saturday to take on Brevard at 2 p.m.
