Catawba Falls to Newberry Despite Arrington's 30 Points
NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Catawba College men’s basketball team fell 109-98 to Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena. Catawba’s Kijaun Arrington led all scorers on the night tallying 30 points and adding 11 rebounds. With the loss Catawba falls to 5-7 on the season and 3-4 in the conference. The #24 Newberry Wolves improve to 12-1 overall and 6-1 in conference.
In the first half Catawba was tied at nine points apiece with 17:26 left on the clock before going on a 12-0 run. The run consisted of four consecutive three point shots from Ben Sealy, Arrington, Jerrin Morrison and Rakeen Brown, respectively. Catawba went into the halftime break with a two point advantage at 46-44.
In the second half Newberry would claim a lead as large as nine points before Catawba would fight back to tie the game with 7:46 left on the clock. The two teams would alternate the lead over the next four minute segment before Newberry would secure the win in the closing minutes.
Alongside Arrington’s 30 points and 11 rebounds, Morrison provided a double-double of his own with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sealy hit four three point shots to contribute a total of 16 points for Catawba.
For Newberry, five players scored double digit figures led by Demarkus Smith with 25. Smith’s points were complimented by Brandon Taylor (21 points), Dondray Walker (16 points), Gerald Evans (14 points) and Xavier Holmes (10 points).
Catawba finished the night shooting 35-for-78 (44.9%) from the field and 12-of-27 (44.4%) from behind the arc. Catawba scored 16-of-26 (61.5%) from the free throw line.
Newberry shot 35-for-72 (48.6%) overall and 13-for-34 (38.2%) from three point range. The Wolves also went 26-of-35 (74.3%) from the charity stripe.
Catawba looks to return home on Saturday as they take on Brevard College at 4:00 p.m.
