Late Challenge Falls Short for Men's Basketball in Loss to Brevard
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Brevard put four players in double figures and got a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds from Brayden Masten in an 87-75 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Tornados improve to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 5-8 and 3-5.
Phil Wallace came off the bench to lead Brevard with 22 points, while Darius Moose joined Masten with 18 points. Trevon Shaw chipped in with a dozen.
KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh HS/Henry CC) led Catawba with a game-high 29 points. He also collected a double-double as he added 13 rebounds. Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg HS) totaled 14 points and Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna HS) scored a dozen.
Brevard led nearly the entire contest, canning seven of its first nine three pointers to lead 31-22. It was a three-pointer from Moose with 13:55 left in the first half that gave the Tornados the lead for good at 16-14. Brevard hit on 53% of its shots in the first half in taking a 38-27 edge to the break. Catawba struggled at just 29%, making only 10-of-34 attempts.
Arrington kept Catawba close in the opening half with 17 points and six rebounds. Brevard pushed its lead in the second half, expanding an eight-point lead on a 16-4 run to 70-50 with 7:26 to go.
Catawba mounted a rally, scoring seven straight points and cutting the margin to 73-64 on a three-pointer by Reggie Perkins (Greensboro, N.C./Phillips Exeter) at the 4:13 mark. Brevard held off the challenge, making 12-of-14 at the stripe in the final four minutes.
Brevard cooled off slightly in the second half, but still shot 51% for the game. The Tornados finished 10-of-24 from long range after making 9-of-16 in the opening half. Catawba shot 35% for the game.
Catawba is back in Goodman Gym on Wednesday, hosting Coker at 8 p.m.
