Johnson Scores 26 in Win over Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C.-- Catawba College’s Bri Johnson scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Indians to an 85-72 victory over Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon. Catawba improves to 9-6 on the year with the win and 6-4 in the conference. Mars Hill falls to 5-10 overall and 3-7 in conference.
Johnson’s 26 points were not the game high in scoring on the day being outdone by Mars Hill’s Camille Glymph, who tallied 30 of her own. The Indians separated themselves on scoreboard thanks to a 19-point game by senior Chloe Bully and a double-double by Jada Huntley with ten points and ten rebounds.
Bully opened the game with a three pointer from the wing that gave Catawba the early lead that they would never surrender. The Lady Indians would enter the halftime break with a 38-30 advantage.
In the second half, Catawba extended their lead to as large as 21 points with 9:49 left on the clock.
The Indians finished the game shooting 31-for-67 (46.3%) and 7-for-13 (53.8%) from three-point range. Catawba also added 16-of-18 free throw shots to their totals. On the other side of the ball Mars Hill converted 23-of-64 (35.9%) shots and just 7-of-28 (25.0%) from behind the arch. The Lions did much better from the charity stripe shooting 19-for-20. Catawba also added a 43-36 advantage on the boards to their totals.
The Lady Indians will be on the road Wednesday as they take on conference rival Wingate at 6:00 p.m.
