Arrington Equals Career-High as Men's Basketball Rolls Past Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Junior KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh HS/Henry CC) equaled a career-high with 30 points to pace host Catawba to an 86-63 win over Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians up their record to 7-8 overall and 5-5 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 7-9 and 2-8.
Arrington had 19 points in the first half, on 6-of-9 shooting with four three-pointers, as Catawba raced to a 47-34 lead. A layup from Arrington had given the Indians an early 18-7 edge before Mars Hill cut the margin to five on a three-pointer by Kevin Haynes at the 7:45 mark. Arrington followed with consecutive three-pointers and two free throws to push the Catawba lead back to 11 at 31-20.
Mars Hill was never able to cut the margin to single digits in the second half. A five-point run by the Lions midway through the half got the visitors within 54-44, but baskets by Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg HS) and Troy Warren (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman HS) along with a three-pointer from Dominique Henderson (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek HS) returned a 15-point lead at 61-46.
The Indians extended the lead in the final minutes which included back-to-back dunks by Arrington and Morrison. Morrison also reached double figures for Catawba with 14 points. Arrington just missed a double-double by grabbing nine rebounds. He hit on 10-of-15 shots and went 5-of-6 behind the arc. Ben Sealey (Hampton, Va./Menchville HS/Virginia Intermont) and Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna HS) each handed out six assists.
Michael Carson led Mars Hill with 15 points. Isaiah Cuthbertson added 13 points and Justin Yeargin 10. Jalen Witherspoon collected eight rebounds.
Catawba shot 48% and committed just eight turnovers. The Lions connected on just 33% and suffered 17 turnovers.
