Huntley Posts Double-Double in Loss to Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. -- Catawba could not overcome a poor shooting first half and fell to host Wingate 62-47 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Catawba Indians shot just 17% (6-of-35) in the first 20 minutes in falling to 9-7 overall and 6-5 in the SAC. The league-leading Bulldogs improve to 12-6 and 10-1.
Jada Huntley (Indian Trail, N.C./Porter Ridge HS) led the Lady Indians, posting a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. She also added four steals. Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./N. Iredell HS/Belmont Abbey) was the only other player to reach double figures with 10 points.
Andrea Bertrand posted 17 points for the Bulldogs. Chantal Dunbar collected a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Catawba hit its first shot and two of its first four as the teams were 4-4 after three minutes. The Lady Indians struggled from that point as Wingate went on a 13-1 run before a three-pointer by Janna Dixon (Advance, N.C./W. Forsyth HS) at the 11:27 mark made it 17-8. The Bulldogs went on to stretch the margin to 17 and took that buffer to the break, leading 33-16.
Wingate led by as many as 20 in the early stages of the second half before Catawba made a spirited run. Huntley capped a 12-3 run on a three-pointer with 12:30 to go to bring the Lady Indians within 41-30. A 6-0 run later in the half cut the margin to eight with 8:32 left. The Bulldogs never let the Lady Indians get closer down the stretch.
Catawba finished the game making just 18-of-73 shots (24.7%). The Bulldogs canned 40% (20-of-50). The Lady Indians pulled down 19 offensive rebounds, but managed only six second-chance points.
Catawba will travel to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday for a 2 pm tip with the Lady Railsplitters.
