Men's Basketball Drops 65-54 Decision at Wingate

MONROE, N.C. -- Host Wingate got 16 points and 10 rebounds from Keith Griffin and grabbed a 65-54 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena.  The Bulldogs improve to 10-7 overall and 7-4 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 7-9 and 5-6.

Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg HS) topped Catawba in scoring with 14 points with KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh HS/Henry CC) adding 12 points and six rebounds.  Julian Sampah (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) and Troy Warren (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman HS) each had eight points.

For Wingate, Xavier Griffin and Terrill Hilliard each tallied 10 points.  Josh Dominguez and Ryan Daye both collected nine points.  Wingate enjoyed a 44-33 edge on the glass and turned 17 offensive boards into 18 second-chance points.

The Indians jumped to a quick 7-2 lead, but Wingate rallied back on a 13-2 run and would not trail after that.  Catawba did pull even late in the first half on a three-pointer by Morrison before the Bulldogs scored the final four points to lead 29-25 at the break.

Wingate pushed the lead to 11 five minutes into the second half and kept a comfortable lead to the finish.  Despite shooting just 38% in the final half, the Indians never let the game get out of reach.

A three-pointer by Morrison capped a 9-3 run to get Catawba within 56-50 with 5:08 to play.  The Indians went cold again down the stretch, hitting just one of four shots with three turnovers in the final five minutes.

Catawba heads to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday to face the NCAA II second-ranked Railsplitters in a 4 pm tip.
