Huntley Drops 30 in 80-72 Win Over LR
SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College women’s basketball team earned a necessary South Atlantic Conference win 80-72 over Lenoir-Rhyne University Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Jada Huntley led the charge for the Indians with 30 points and eight rebounds. Catawba improves to 10-8 on the season and 7-6 in the SAC while the Bears fall to 6-11 and 5-8 respectively.
Catawba jumped out early building a lead as large as 18 points in the first half. Huntley was the biggest impact for the lead tallying 17 points in the first half.
Lenoir-Rhyne mounted a rally in the second half closing the gap to seven points with 14:04 left on the clock. The Bears would continue to comeback with a Morgan Cooper layup to bring the game within two with 5:00 remaining.
Bri Johnson would be the first Catawba Lady Indians to score and start to pull back away over the final minutes. Huntley would score eight of her 13 second half points in those final minutes to pull the game out to the final eight point win.
As a team Catawba shot 48.4% from the field going 31-of-64 including 5-of-16 from three point range. From the free throw line the Lady Indians went 13-of-18.
On the other side of the ball Lenoir-Rhyne shot 28-of-61 (45.9%) from the floor and 2-for-8 from behind the arc. The Bears shot well from the free throw line scoring 14-of-15.
Catawba held the rebounding edge 39-32 while adding a 13-9 assist advantage.
The Lady Indians will travel next to Carson-Newman on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
