Richardson Leads Offensive Explosion For Baseball In Opening Win

BELMONT, N.C. -- Each Catawba starter produced at least one hit and scored a run in a season-opening 27-7 drubbing of Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.  The 27 runs equal a school record for Catawba which has happened four times, the most recent coming against Anderson in 2006.

The Catawba Indians scored in each inning except the first to post the big win.  Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS), Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS) and T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) each banged out four hits in the 25-hit attack.  Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian State) produced seven RBI with Smith and Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) both knocking in five runs.

It was consecutive eight run innings by Catawba in sixth and seventh frames that broke the game open.  Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) had a three-run double and Smith a two-run homer in the sixth.  Richardson capped the seventh with a grand slam that made the score 23-6.

Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) picked up the win.  He pitched into the sixth and allowed four runs off seven hits with three strikeouts.

The Crusaders took a quick lead as back-to-back two-out doubles in the first by Anthony Dimino and Ryan Allen put the hosts up 1-0.  The Indians struck back in the second on a RBI single by Houston and took the lead for good when Albertson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Richardson added a two-run double in the third and a RBI-single in the fourth as Catawba stretched the lead to 7-1 after five.  Richardson's seven RBI and five runs scores were both just one shy of the school record.  He delivered three hits along with Albertson.

Lorenzo Wright had two hits for Belmont Abbey, including a three-run inside the park home run in the sixth.  Nick Nunziato also homered for the Crusades and finished with two hits and three RBI.

Catawba is set to host Belmont Abbey on Sunday at Newman Park for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
