Softball falls twice to USC-Aiken

Catawba College dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting USC-Aiken in softball action on Sunday afternoon at Ellis Park. Aiken won the opener 3-2 in nine innings, then won game two 4-1. Catawba falls to 13-13, while USC-Aiken improves to 11-12. Catawba opened the scoring in the first game as Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) delivered a RBI groundout in the second. Aiken struck right back, scoring off an error in the third. Catawba had a potential game-winning hit in the seventh turned into a double play line out. The Lady Indians had the bases loaded in the eighth with no outs, but failed to score. After a force out at home, Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) was thrown out at home trying to score on a fly out to end the threat. Aiken scored a pair of runs in the ninth on a pair of bunts, while the Lady Indians scored once on a ground out by Handy. Amy Fox (Bridgewater, VA) earned the win, allowing just five hits and no earned runs over the nine innings. Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) suffered the loss for Catawba, scattering six hits over nine innings with one earned run. Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) had three of Catawba’s five hits. Aiken scored single runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings to take game two. The two early runs came after passed balls, while Ashley Garnett (Cayce, SC) had a RBI double in the fifth and Jayme Durand (N. Augusta, SC) a homer in the sixth. The lone Catawba run came on a single by Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD). Garnett had three hits for the Lady Pacers. #####
