Warren's Tip-In Lifts Men's Basketball to Double Overtime Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Sophomore Troy Warren’s (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman HS) tip-in with 2.6 seconds left in the second overtime lifted Catawba to an 82-80 win over visiting Chowan in men’s basketball action on Monday night at Goodman Gym. The victory improves the Catawba Indians to 9-11, while the Hawks fall to 11-10.
After Chowan’s Mark Anthony Buright tied the game on two free throws with 37 seconds remaining, Catawba held for the final shot. Jameel Taylor’s (Anderson, S.C./Hanna HS) driving layup with five seconds left was off the mark, but Warren was able to tip-in the rebound to give the Indians the winning points. Kortez Smith had a desperation attempt from just inside midcourt that was well wide.
Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C./E. Mecklenburg HS) scored 19 second-half points to help Catawba get to overtime and finished with a game-high 28. His jumper with 16 seconds left in regulation knotted the game at 63-all. Buright had a shot to win it for Chowan, but his jumper at the buzzer was off the mark.
Morrison had a chance for Catawba at the end of the first overtime, but he missed from three-point range at the buzzer. Catawba had led by five at the start of the first extra period thanks to a three-pointer by Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, Lithuania/North Hills) and a jumper by Morrison. Kyree Bethel and Smith pulled Chowan even on three-pointers before Morrison put the Indians up 73-71 with 41 seconds left. Smith tied it on a layup with 19 seconds to play before Morrison’s long three-point attempt.
A three-point play by Smith gave the Hawks a 76-73 edge in the second overtime, but Taylor connected on a three-pointer on Catawba’s next possession. Taylor tied the game at 78-78 on two free throws and Warren hit a jumper in the paint to put the Indians up 80-78 in the final minute. Buright hit two free throws with 37 seconds left to set up Warren’s heroics at the end for Catawba.
Marijosius, Taylor and KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh HS/Henry CC) followed Morrison with 13 points for Catawba. Warren had nine point and nine rebounds.
Buright led five double-figure scorers for Chowan with 20 points. Smith added 19 and Bethel tossed in 14. Jalen Marshall added 11 points and Josh Mellette scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Chowan got out of the gates quickly, hitting on five of its first six three-pointers to race to a 28-13 lead. Catawba whittled the lead down to two late in the half before the Hawks took a 42-34 lead to the break after Buright’s three-pointer in the dying seconds.
The Indians cut the deficit to a single point several times in the second half before Marijosius finally gave Catawba a 60-59 edge on two free throws at the 5:03 mark. Buright put the Hawks up 62-60 on a pair of free throws and converted one of two from the stripe with 34 seconds left for a 63-61 lead. Morrison then pulled Catawba even to send the game to overtime.
After shooting 56% in the first half, Chowan made just 30% in the second half and 46% in overtime. Catawba canned 7-of-10 shots in the extra two periods and finished the game at 49%.
Catawba travels to Queens on Wednesday with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
