Baseball Begins Conference Slate on Friday at Carson-Newman
With a week and three games under their belt, the Catawba Indians baseball team travels to Carson-Newman this weekend to open South Atlantic Conference play. Catawba was the preseason favorite with nine of the first place votes from the SAC coaches. The Eagles were picked sixth in the poll.
Catawba leads the series with Carson-Newman 55-37 and has enjoyed recent success in Jefferson City, Tenn. Catawba was won eight straight on the road against Carson-Newman and are 24-14 lifetime at the Silver Diamond Complex.
The Indians got off to a hot start last weekend, matching the school record for runs scored in the opener, with a 27-7 victory at Belmont Abbey. Dylan Richardson collected seven RBI, including four on a grand slam, and scored five runs. The junior shortstop went on to take SAC Player of the Week honors, finishing the week with a .727 average and 10 RBI.
Catawba concluded the three-game set with the Crusaders by splitting a doubleheader on Sunday. Craig Brooks got a no decision in his start. He allowed just a single run off one hit with 11 strikeouts in five innings. Freshman Connor Johnson posted six shutout innings in his debut to lead Catawba to a 6-0 win in the finale. He surrendered just two hits and fanned eight.
Carson-Newman dropped a 2-1 decision in 14 innings at Limestone on Wednesday in its opener. Ryan Addington scored the Eagle run in the first on a single and two stolen bases. Logan Shaftner allowed just a run on four hits over five and two-thirds innings. Carson Bryant threw four scoreless innings of relief.
After this weekend, Catawba will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face Stillman in a three-game series next weekend.
