JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Carson-Newman scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to grab a 5-4 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.  The Eagles improve to 1-1 in the league opener for both teams.  The Catawba Indians are 2-2.

Carson-Newman used two errors in the eighth on an errant throw on a pick off at first and another throwing error as Bryan Everhart was going to third.  Everhart had tied the game on a two-out single up the middle.

Catawba led 4-1 after five innings on two-run homers from Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) and T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech).  Carson-Newman got two runs back in the sixth on a two-out, two-run double by Ryan Addington.  The Eagles then rallied for two more in the eighth.

Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) had two hits for Catawba.  Matt Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS) had a hit and scored twice.  Catawba got the tying run to second in the ninth, but couldn't get the run home.

Matt Farmakis (Sharpsburg, Ga./Northgate HS) took the loss for Catawba.  He relieved Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) in the eighth with the Indians holding a one-run lead.  He allowed one earned run over his inning and a third and fanned two.  Shepard went six and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs off six hits with eight strikeouts.

Quinton Yocom (1-0) grabbed the win for Carson-Newman, hurling 143 pitches in the complete game.  He surrendered the four runs off seven hits while striking out 10.  Addington led the Eagles with three hits.  Cody Fox and Everhart each had two hits and drove in a run.

The teams will complete the three-game series with a noon double header at the Silver Diamond.
