Softball Pounds Out Two Wins Over Glenville State
SALISBURY, N.C -- Catawba opened its 2015 softball season by cruising to a pair of wins over visiting Glenville State on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians claimed two five-inning victories by the scores of 11-0 and 21-2.
Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS) pitched the win in the opener. She struck out the side over the first three innings while surrendering a hit and walk. The junior finished with a five-inning shutout, giving up just the one hit with two walks and 11 strikeouts. She also scored three runs.
Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS) had a big day at the plate. She went 3-for-3 with four RBI in the opener then rapped out four hits in five at bats in the second game with four RBI. Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Madison HS) had four hits on the day and collected three RBI in the opener. Taylor Adams (Smithfield, N.C./N. Johnston HS) picked up three hits and five RBI in the nightcap after driving in a single run in the opener.
Shumaker put the Lady Indians up 3-0 in the opener with a two-run double in the first. She later added a two-run double in the fourth. Gerone singled home two runs in the third to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Bailey Rabel had the hit for the Lady Pioneers in the opener and also had a hit in game two while scoring a run. Mackenzie Smith collected both the RBI for Glenville State on a single in the third inning of game two.
Catawba tied a record set in its first year of fast pitch softball in 1990 by plating 13 runs in the second inning of the game two rout. Shumaker helped the Lady Indians to a 5-0 lead after an inning with a three-run double in the opening frame.
In the record-tying inning, Adams doubled home two runs and Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) singled home two. The Lady Indians collected 10 hits in the frame and sent 17 batters to plate.
Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston HS) picked up the win in game two. She surrendered two runs off two hits with four walks and six strikeouts. At the plate, Turner added three hits and drove in two runs.
The Lady Indians return to action at Pfeiffer on Tuesday with a 1 pm doubleheader.
