Baseball Salvages Final Game of C-N Series
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Catawba and Carson-Newman split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex. Carson-Newman took the opener 1-0, while the Catawba Indians came back to earn the split with a 6-3 victory. The Eagles stand at 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while Catawba is 3-3 and 1-2.
Vince Apicella threw a three-hit shutout for Carson-Newman in the opener. He walked two and fanned 13. He got the only run he needed in the seventh when Bo Ausmus led off the frame with a home run.
T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) had two of Catawba’s hits, including a double, but the Indians could muster no run support for Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS). Brooks went seven and a third innings giving up the run on five hits. He walked one and struck out 10.
Catawba came back to take the final game of the series, benefitting from four Eagle errors. Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) staked the Indians to 1-0 lead with a homer in the first.
Catawba snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth on several Eagle errors. Wharton reached on an error and came around to score on another error in the frame. Brooks also raced home a bad throw as C-N had three miscues in the inning.
The Eagles overcame the errors later in the fourth on a two-run homer by Bryan Everhart. Catawba came right back in the top of the fifth to score the winning runs. It was another error that opened the door for the Indians when Emmitt Carden (Whispering Pines, N.C./Union Pines HS) reached to start the inning. After a hit batter, Wharton singled home Carden for the go ahead run.
Catawba added two more runs in the fifth on RBI doubles from Brooks and Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS). Connor Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan HS) allowed the first two Eagle runners to reach to start the sixth, but Ryan McClintock (Matthews, N.C./Providence HS) retired the final five batters to earn the save.
Johnson improved to 2-0 with the win. He went five and a third innings and gave up three runs on five hits. He walked two and fanned eight. Brooks had two hits with two runs scored. Ausmus had two hits for the Eagles in game two.
Catawba travels to Stillman next weekend for a three-game series that starts Friday at 2 p.m.
