Men's Lacrosse Falls In Opener on Late Goal
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Mount Olive's Matt Shields scored with 49 seconds to play to lift the visiting Trojans to an 11-10 win over Catawba in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. It was the opener for both teams.
Shields grabbed a loose ball just outside the crease, after a nice stick check from the Indians, and tallied the winner. Catawba had three shots in the final 33 seconds, but none were on target.
The final goal ended a back-and-forth game that saw neither team lead by more than two goals. Catawba enjoyed the only two-goal leads, coming at 7-5 and 9-7. That 9-7 lead came late in the third quarter, but the Trojans reeled off three straight to lead 10-9.
Alex Tendall scored the go-ahead goal in a man-up situation with 12:11 remaining. Catawba knotted the score at 10-all on Dalton Cook's (St. Augustine's Fla./Bartram Trail HS) tally with 8:43 left. The Indians had several shots to take the lead, but Mount Olive goalie Ross Bowman made two saves, including one with just over two minutes left with Catawba a man-up.
Cook had three goals and an assist for Catawba. Ty Sellers (St. John's, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) also scored three goals. Connor Kennedy (Weddington, N.C./Weddington/Tampa) picked up two goals and Zach LaFavre (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth HS) had a goal and an assist. Goalie Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) collected six saves.
Shields and Brett Kingston each scored four goals for Mount Olive with Kingston also grabbing an assist. Jake Duarte scored two goals with three assists. Bowman finished with nine saves.
Catawba returns to action on Feb. 21, hosting Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m.
