Huntley's Basket With 3.5 Seconds Left Lifts Women's Basketball Over Coker
HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Jada Huntley (Indian Trail, N.C./Porter Ridge HS) came up with two late steals and hit a winning layup with 3.5 seconds remaining as Catawba claimed a 67-66 victory over Coker in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at the DeLoach Center. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 14-8 overall and 11-6 in the SAC, extending their winning streak to five games and keeping them in the top four of the league standings. Coker falls to 9-14 and 5-12.
The Lady Indians led by as many as 14 in the second half, but saw Coker whittle the lead away over the final eight minutes. Hailey Yohn's three-pointer capped a 10-2 run that brought the Cobras even with 3:22 left.
Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell HS/Belmont Abbey) answered that three and Catawba led 65-61 after a free throw by Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance HS) with 1:43 to go. Coker got a three-pointer from Heidrun Kristmundsdottir and a jumper by Tanesha Stenson to grab a 66-65 edge with 53 seconds left.
Catawba missed a shot, but Huntley came up with the first of her two late steals with 15 seconds remaining. The Lady Indians missed two layups and Huntley was able to gain a jump ball off the second miss to give Catawba another possession with seven seconds left. Zhaquondalee Greer (Greensboro, N.C./Academy at Smith/Charleston Southern) drove and found a wide open Huntley for the winning layup. Coker failed to get off a final shot.
The Lady Indians overcame a seven-point deficit over the last six minutes of the first half. Down 27-20, Catawba outscored the Cobras 18-4 over those final minutes to lead 38-31 at the break. The Lady Indians built a 55-41 edge on a layup by Greer with 7:58 to go before Coker rallied to produce the thrilling ending.
Rogers finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for Catawba with Huntley adding 14 points and eight boards. Johnson, Greer and Chloe Bully (Hannut, Belgium/KOL Landen) all scored 11 for the Lady Indians. Huntley recorded five steals and Greer handed out five assists.
Stenson led all scorers with 19 for Coker. Lyric Leverster followed with 13 and Yohn tallied 11. Stenson led the Cobras with six rebounds and also posted five steals.
Catawba will host SAC co-leading Anderson on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Lady Indians handed the Trojans one of their two league losses earlier this season.
