Baseball Heads to Alabama to Face Stillman For Weekend Series
Catawba’s baseball team will travel to Stillman this weekend for a non-conference series with the Tigers. The series has been altered due to cold weather forecasted on Sunday. Following Friday's opener, the teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 pm eastern time. The Catawba Indians enter the weekend with a 3-3 mark. Stillman is 1-6 on the young season.
The Indians and Tigers have played on three other occasions with Catawba claiming wins in all three. Each game has been decided by a single run with the last meetings taking place at Stillman in 2012.
T.J. Wharton is leading Catawba in batting average through the first two weeks, hitting an even .500. Dylan Richardson and Kyle Smith have each knocked in 10 runs, while Will Albertson has nine RBI and three home runs.
On the mound, Connor Johnson has won both of his first two starts and posts a 2.38 ERA. Craig Brooks is still looking for his first victory despite a 1.46 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 12 and a third innings.
Stillman is hitting .335 as a team, but have an 8.07 ERA and have committed 19 errors in seven games. Nick Vitale is one of the offensive leaders. He is batting .581 and has scored 11 runs. David Jervis is the top RBI man with nine and is hitting .364. Tyler Stewart has two no decisions in a pair of starts and has a 1.64 ERA over 11 innings.
After this weekend, Catawba travels to nationally-ranked Mount Olive next Wednesday before hosting Brevard in a weekend league series on Friday and Saturday.
