Softball Splits Double Header with UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. -- The Catawba College softball team split a double header with UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon at LRA Field. Catawba fell 9-1 in the opening game but rallied to a 13-4 win in the second game. Catawba moves to 4-2 on the early season while the Braves now stand at 8-3.

Catawba's lone run came from a Caroline Turner solo home run in the first at bat of the game. UNC Pembroke rallied with a run in the bottom of the first, two in the second and a fourth run in the third. Catawba committed two costly errors in the game including one in the fourth that allowed five runs to come home. The Indians couldn't score in the fifth and the game was called due to the eight run rule.

Carley Tysinger pitched the opening game for the Lady Indians and was credited with allowing only three of the nine runs as a result of the errors. Tysinger falls to 2-1 on the season while Selena Ashley, a former Catawba pitcher, improves to 5-1 on the year.

The Indians batted just 2-for-16 in the opening game while the Braves batted .409 going 9-for-22.

In the second game, Catawba entered into the seventh inning tied at four. in the top of the seventh, Catawba loaded the bases with their first three at bats. Pembroke went to the bullpen to bring in sophomore Dakota Leviner.  Catawba would continued to leave the bases loaded the entire inning with a total of seven singles and three walks to give the Indians a nine run inning. Pembroke couldn't answer in the bottom half of the inning giving Catawba the win.

The Indians finished the second game batting 19-for-37 (.514) while Pembroke went just 4-for-26.

Turner earned the seven inning win to advance to 2-1 on the season for Catawba while starter, Katie Saunders, was credited with the loss for the Lady Braves.

On the day, the Indians are led by Emily Huneycutt who went 4-for-5 on the day. Turner's home run helped her finished the day going 3-for-8. Huneycutt, Tysinger, Caroline Ward and Kristen Stinnard each hit a double in the second game.

Catawba will travel next to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday for a double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
