Taylor Drops 21 Points to Lead Catawba to 79-75 Victory
HICKORY, N.C. -- Jameel Taylor scored 21 points to lead the Catawba College men’s basketball team to a 79-75 win against host Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference action at Shuford gym. The win gives the Catawba Indians a 13-12 overall record and 10-9 in the conference. The Bears now stand at 8-15 and 6-13, respectively.
Lenoir-Rhyne began to pull away in the first half achieving their largest lead of the night with a 29-18 lead with 9:43 left to go in the first half. Catawba immediately responded with a 17-4 run to retake the lead. The Indians entered the halftime break with a 42-38 lead.
In the second half the teams fought a tough battle the entire time with neither team able to pull away. Lenoir-Rhyne was able to jump out to a 12-2 run over the first four minutes of the half to claim a 50-44 lead. The two teams would trade baskets for the next several minutes as Catawba could get close but not reclaim the lead.
With 8:03 left in the game Lenoir-Rhyne held a 66-58 lead over the Indians. Catawba’s Jerrin Morrison quickly retaliated with a three point shot to bring the game within five. Morrison would then steal the ball on the next possession and score on a jumper to pull the Indians within three.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Will Perry was credited with a charge on the next possession before Taylor added a three pointer to tie the game at 66 with 6:59 left to go in the game. Another defensive stop and a Morrison three pointer would give the Indians the lead.
With 1:04 left on the clock a Justice Morgan three point shot for the Bears tied the game up at 75 points apiece. Taylor would once again be clutch for the Indians by scoring a layup on the next possession. A Lenoir-Rhyne missed three point attempt led to a foul to send Taylor to the free throw line. Taylor would make both to secure the win for Catawba.
Taylor added six rebound and four assists to his 21 points, also going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Morrison finished the game with 19 points coming off the bench for the Tribe and grabbing five rebounds in the process. KJ Arrington also contributed 10 points to Catawba’s efforts.
