Baseball Shuffles Brevard Series to Monday Doubleheader
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba hopes to return to the diamond on Monday against Brevard in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Due to weather, the teams have scrapped the original three-game series that was scheduled to start on Friday night.
Catawba is coming off a sweep last weekend at Stillman, outscoring the Tigers 41-8 over the three games. Blake Houston had a big series, going 5-for-7 (.714) with six walks, a double, a home run and five RBI. He also swiped three bases. T.J. Wharton batted .538 (7-for13) with six RBI in the three games.
On the mound, all three Catawba starters posted wins in five innings of work. Shaefer Shepard improved to 2-0, while Craig Brooks notched his first win as he allowed only an unearned off three hits with six strikeouts. Connor Johnson has won his first three starts and tossed five scoreless frames versus Stillman.
Brevard took the opener at Carson-Newman last weekend before dropping both games of Saturday’s doubleheader. J.D. Chaplain improved to 2-0 by winning the opener. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Hunter Donaldson, Ryan Smith and Pat Quinn each had three hits in the victory.
Last year’s series with Brevard was also limited to a doubleheader due to weather. The Tornados took both ends, winning both by a single run. Those wins snapped a 12-game losing streak to Catawba. The Indians lead the all-time series 16-4 and are 9-1 in games at Newman Park with a current nine-game streak.
After the Brevard doubleheader, Catawba is scheduled to travel to Pfeiffer on Tuesday and Newberry next weekend for a league series.
