Beggs Notches Three Goals As Women's Lacrosse Falls to Queens
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Queens got goals from 11 different players in grabbing an 18-5 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex. The 17th-ranked Royals improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-1 and 0-1.
After giving up the opening goal to Catawba's Caroline Beggs (St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail HS), Queens reeled off 16 straight goals to grab a commanding 16-1 lead 10 minutes into the second half. Catawba tallied four of the next five goals over a seven-minute stretch to close the margin to 17-5.
Abigail Paulus had three of the Queens goals and also provided three assists. The Royals got two goals from Brittany Larranaga, Kelly Dowd, Maggie Masters, Alexander Bruder and Becca Chen. Dowd added four draw control wins.
Beggs led Catawba with three goals and an assist. Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth HS) had a goal and one assist. Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) had the other goal for the Lady Indians.
Queens dominated the shot total with a 41-12 advantage. The Royals won 17 of the 25 draw controls and also helped cause 19 Catawba turnovers. Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) had 11 saves over the first 50 minutes of action for Catawba. Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue HS) recorded four saves over the final 10 minutes.
Catawba travels to Young Harris on Sunday at 2 p.m.
