Brooks Throws No-Hitter As Baseball Sweeps DH With Brevard
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba senior Craig Brooks' (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS) no-hitter highlighted a doubleheader sweep of Brevard in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Monday at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 7-6 and 3-5.
Brooks' seven inning no-hitter marked the first complete game no-hitter for a Catawba pitcher since 1988 when Rob Linder did the trick against N.C. A&T. The Catawba Indians last threw a no-hitter in 2004 with Paul Link and Brian Benton combining against Barber-Scotia. It is only the sixth recorded no-hitter in school history.
Brevard had four baserunners against Brooks, but only one advanced as far as second base. Brooks hit a batter in the first, but got a double play to end the frame. The Tornados coaxed a one-out and a two-out walk in the second, but Brooks got a pop up to end the inning. A fielders' choice ended the fourth after a two-out walk.
With the game scoreless into the bottom of the fourth, Catawba finally put runs on the board and it was Brooks who knocked in the first run, doubling home Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS), who had singled to start the inning. Later in the inning, Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) delivered a two-out, two-run single and Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) singled home the final run.
Brooks sat down the final 10 men he faced, getting three ground outs in the seventh to complete his no-hitter. The senior improved to 2-1 and fanned seven in the win. Richardson collected two of Catawba's seven hits to hand J.D. Chaplain (2-1) his first loss.
Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) kept the Tornados hitless two more innings in the nightcap before giving up a one-out single to Tyler Tant. William O'Hara followed with a single and after a walk the Tornados had loaded the bases with one out. Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan HS) got Catawba out of the inning as he threw out Tant at the plate after a flyout by Hunter Donaldson to keep the Indians up 2-0.
Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler HS) doubled Catawba's lead with a two-out, two-run single in the third and Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) cranked a three-run homer in the fourth. Albertson finished with two hits and four RBI.
Shepard improved to 3-0, throwing five scoreless innings on two hits with three strikeouts. Matt Farmakis (Sharpsburg, Ga./Northgate HS) and Ryan McClintock (Matthews, N.C./Providence HS) each tossed a perfect inning of relief to close out the game. Zac Joyce fell to 0-3 for the Tornados.
Catawba jumps back into action tomorrow with a road game at Pfeiffer at 2:30 p.m.
