Wharton And Albertson Homer For Baseball In 8-4 Win At Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin/Guilford Tech) and Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) homered to power Catawba to an 8-4 win over host Pfeiffer in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Ferebee Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 9-3, notching their seventh straight win. The Falcons fall to 10-6.
Trailing 1-0 after an inning, Catawba plated five in the second and led the rest of the way. Albertson capped the inning with a three-run homer. Pfeiffer closed within 5-3 in the third on a two-run single from Anthony Allende, but Wharton got those runs back with a two-run homer in the fifth.
Albertson, Wharton, Grayland Fowler (Moore, S.C./Dorman HS) and Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan HS) all had two hits for the Indians. Albertson scored three runs and drove in three on the one swing. Fowler put Catawba on top with his RBI single in the second after Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) had tied the game by scoring on an error.
Connor Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan) made the start and pitched into the fifth. Avery Bowles (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson HS) got Catawba out of a jam in that inning by inducing a double play ball with two on and one out. Bowles (1-0) picked up the win.
Pfeiffer threatened again in the sixth and this time it was Sean Grant (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell HS) who got the Indians out of trouble. With a run in and the bases loaded and one out, Grant posted a flyout and a strikeout to end the frame.
Russ Weiker (Albemarle, N.C./S. Stanly HS/Liberty) threw two scoreless frames and Ryan McClintock (Matthews, N.C./Providence HS) came in the record the final three outs with two runners on to post his second save.
Catawba returns to league action this weekend. The Indians begin a three-game series on Friday at 4 p.m. at Newberry.
