Baseball Takes Winning Streak On Road To Newberry This Weekend
The Catawba baseball team will carry a seven-game winning streak into this weekend’s three-game series at Newberry. Friday’s opener has been pushed up to a 4 pm first pitch to avoid colder temperatures at night.
Catawba’s last venture to the Smith Road Complex was not a pleasant one for the Indians as Newberry pulled off a three-game sweep. Catawba leads the overall series 70-36, but the teams have split the last 10 games with each winning five.
The Indians avoided another slow league start (1-4 in 2014) by sweeping a doubleheader from Brevard on Monday. Craig Brooks highlighted the day by throwing the school’s sixth no-hitter in the opener. Catawba posted shutout wins of 4-0 and 7-0 over the Tornados. Catawba claimed an 8-4 win over Pfeiffer Wednesday, getting home runs from Will Albertson and T.J. Wharton.
Newberry was unable to play its league series with Mars Hill last weekend, but got into the win column on Wednesday with an 11-1 victory over Lincoln. Ty Powell got things started with a two-run single in the second and finished with two hits and three RBI. Alex Roberts allowed a run off three hits with seven strikeouts over five innings to get the win.
Wharton has been one of the top hitters in the league over the first month with a .511 batting average. Albertson has hit a team-high five home runs with 18 RBI. Blake Houston is batting .415 with an on-base percentage of .556.
On the mound, Catawba as a team has a 2.87 ERA. Brooks tops the list with just a 0.74 ERA over four starts. He has a 2-1 record with 34 strikeouts in 24 and a third innings and has allowed just nine hits. Shaefer Shepard and Connor Johnson have both posted 3-0 records to start the season and look for Matt Farmakis (0-1, 2.84 ERA) to get a start this weekend at Newberry.
Albert Baur leads Newberry’s offense. He enters the series with a .396 average, three home runs and 15 RBI. Brandan Sheridan tops the Wolves with a .452 batting average, while JoJo Bradley is hitting .419. Wesley Camp is the top hurler with a 3-0 record and a 1.61 ERA.
The Indians will start a long home stand after this weekend which will start March 6 vs. Lenoir-Rhyne.
