NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Senior T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin/Guilford Tech) had four hits and three RBI as Catawba claimed the opener of a three-game South Atlantic Conference baseball series 12-7 on Friday at the Smith Road Complex.  The Catawba Indians extend their winning streak to eight and improve to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC.  The Wolves fall to 8-5 and 4-3.

Will Albertson (Sofia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) had three hits and scored three runs, while Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) drove in three to follow up the big game from Wharton.  Sean Grant (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell HS) notched his first career win with an inning and two-thirds in relief of Matt Farmakis (Sharpesburg, Ga./Northgate HS).

Newberry jumped on top in the first on the first of two Albert Baur home runs to lead 2-0.  Catawba came right back in the second, plating runs on a triple from Austin Stilley (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford HS) and a ground out from Bowden.  Wharton put the Indians up to stay with a RBI single in the third.

Catawba added three unearned runs in the fourth and Bowden singled home two more in the fifth to push the Catawba lead to 8-2.  Newberry got three runs back in the bottom half of the fifth, two on solo homers from Baur and Brandan Sheridan.

Wharton helped stretch the lead back out with RBI doubles in the sixth and eighth innings.  Newberry loaded the bases with a run in and two outs in the eighth before Ryan McClintock (Matthews, N.C./Providence HS) posted a strikeout to end the frame.  He notched the save, his third, after allowing a run in the ninth, but stranding runners on the corners.

Baur was the big bat for Newberry with five hits and four RBI.  Sheridan and Nolan Schrenker each had two hits, including a home run.  Jonathan Rosenberger (0-2) took the loss for the Wolves.  He allowed five earned runs over four innings.

The teams will complete the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
