Tysinger Mows Down 16 As Softball Tops Flagler

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- After nearly a two-week layoff due to weather, Catawba’s softball returned to the diamond and claimed a 7-1 win over Flagler on Friday night at Cougar Field.  Several teams who were scheduled to play in the canceled Mid South Classic traveled to Columbus State for games this weekend in the CSU Classic II.  With the win, Catawba improves to 5-2, while the Saints fall to 4-11.

Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston HS) and Carly Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS) each homered in the win.  Tysinger also earned the win in the circle.

Catawba struck in the third to break a scoreless tie.  Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) doubled home a run and Turner followed with a three-run homer to make it 4-0.  Tysinger followed Kristen Stinnard’s (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) RBI single in the fifth with a two-run homer for a 7-0 cushion.

Flagler broke up the shutout on a Tori Volz RBI double in the seventh.  Volz had two hits along with Malloree Escue.

Tysinger improved to 3-1 with the complete game.  She allowed the run on six hits with 16 strikeouts.  Turner added a triple in the fifth for a two-hit game.

Catawba will play two games at Columbus State on Saturday.  The Lady Indians are set to face the host Cougars at 5 pm and Bellarmine at 7 pm.
