Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader At Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Catawba and Newberry split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. The Catawba Indians picked up a 6-4 win in the opener, while Newberry posted a 1-0 victory in game two. Catawba stands at 11-4 overall and 5-3 in the SAC. The Wolves are 9-6 and 5-4.
Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS) kept Newberry off the board for six innings of the opener as the Indians built a 6-0 lead. Half of those runs came on a two-out, bases clearing double by Will Albertson (Sofia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) in the third. Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) and Grayland Fowler (Moore, S.C./Dorman HS) got the final two runs in on bases loaded walks with two outs in the sixth.
Newberry got two unearned runs in seventh and closed to within 6-4 on Albert Baur’s two-run homer in the eighth. The Wolves got the tying run on base in the ninth, but Ryan McClintock (Matthews, N.C./Providence HS) got out of the inning to nab his fourth save.
Brooks (3-1) went eight innings. He allowed just three hits, walked one and fanned eight. Only two of the four runs scored were earned. Albertson had three hits to go with the three RBI. Fowler had a pair of RBI and T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin/Guilford Tech) collected two hits.
Brandan Sheridan had two of the five Newberry hits. Wesley Camp (3-1) took the loss. He went five and two-thirds innings and gave up all six runs (four earned) off nine this with six strikeouts.
Cole Cromer (2-2) tossed a four-hit shutout for the Wolves in the series finale. He walked none and struck out seven. Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) was the tough luck loser. He gave up just five hits and one unearned run. Shepard (3-1) walked two and fanned nine.
The lone run of the game came in the second as Newberry loaded the bases with one. A fielding error allowed the run to score. Catawba’s best chance to score was in the fourth as Fowler and Emmitt Carden (Whispering Pines, N.C./Union Pines HS) led off with singles. Cromer got the big out, inducing a grounder off the bat of Albertson that was turned into a double play.
Carden had two hits for Catawba. No Newberry player had more than one hit.
The Indians return to action next weekend, host Lenoir-Rhyne for a three-game series. The teams open up on Friday night at 6 pm with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 pm.
