Softball ends 23-game conference losing streak with sweep of TusculumGREENEVILLE, TN -- Catawba College took advantage of three Tusculum College errors to win game one then used timely hitting in game two to sweep a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from the Pioneers 2-1 and 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at Edmonds Field. The contest was the SAC opener for both teams and the Lady Indians snapped a 23-game SAC losing streak dating back to the 2001 season and improved to 15-13 on the year. The Pioneers, now 16-12 overall, also lost for the first time at home all season (10-2). In the opener, Catawba loaded the bases with no out in the third, but Tusculum starter Laura Williams (LaVergne, TN) induced two groundouts and got a strikeout to end the inning. Neither team was able to get on the board until the Lady Indians put two runners across in the top of the fifth. Catawba took advantage of two TC errors, scoring its first run when the Pioneers threw away a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore rightfielder Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) drove in the second run of the inning with a fielder's choice. Williams ended the inning by getting a 1-2-3 double play. Tusculum got back in the game in the sixth when freshman leftfielder Jessica Turner (Frankfort, KY) doubled in sophomore centerfielder Jessica Taylor (Greeneville, TN), but was unable to do further damage. Of Catawba's four hits, three were off the bat of junior catcher Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA). Sophomore Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) gave up just two hits and one earned run for the victory (4-7). Williams (9-3) allowed four hits and two unearned runs in the loss. The Pioneers had better luck getting runners on base in game two, but could not get them home as they left 12 runners on. After Catawba scored once in the top of the first, TC answered with one in the bottom half of the inning as junior first baseman Mitzi Foust (Andersonville, TN) singled in Turner. The contest remained tied until the fifth when back-to-back doubles from freshman shortstop Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) and Rivera made the score 3-1 in favor of the Lady Indians. Tusculum loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but left them stranded after an infield fly and a double play. Freshman centerfielder Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) gunned down TC's Laura Menchaca (Clarksville, TN) at the plate attempting to tag up from third. Rivera gave Catawba an insurance run in the seventh with her fourth hit, another double, and third RBI of the game. Sophomore Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) and sophomore Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) combined for the win, giving up six hits and one earned run. Freshman Sue Bobbitt (Weyburn, Saskatchewan, CANADA) took the loss. #####
