Softball Tops Bellarmine To Close Out CSU Classic II

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Catawba finished up play at the CSU Classic II on Sunday morning and topped Bellarmine 3-2 at Cougar Field.  The Catawba Indians upped their record to 7-3 on the season.  Bellarmine is 7-6.

A day after dropping a 7-2 decision to the Knights, Catawba struck for two runs in the second to take the lead.  Singles with one out from Emily Huneycutt (Oakboro, N.C./W. Stanly HS) and Taylor Adams (Smithfield, N.C./N. Johnston HS) led to the runs.  Huneycutt scored on an error, while Adams came home on a single from Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Madison HS).

Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS) worked out of a jam in the bottom of the second as Bellarmine loaded the bases with two out and closed the gap when Kayla Padgett was hit by a pitch.  Tysinger stuck out the final batter of the inning to avoid further damage.

Catawba picked up a big insurance run in the seventh as  Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston HS) doubled home Gerone, who had led off the frame with a single.  Bellarmine got a two out home run from Ally Foster in its seventh and got the tying run at first on a single before Tysinger posted the final out.

Tysinger (5-1) went the distance and fanned 12 in the win.  Gerone had two hits.

The Lady Indians return to action on Saturday, traveling to GRU Augusta for a 1 pm doubleheader.
