Baseball Cruises Past Davis & Elkins


SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba claimed an 11-0 win over visiting Davis & Elkins in baseball action on Monday night at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians improve to 12-4, while the Senators drop their opener.

T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin/Guilford Tech)  got Catawba off to a quick start with a two-run single in the first.  Catawba plated three runs in each of the first three innings.  Wharton added a solo home run in the second.

The Indians rapped out a dozen hits in the win and was even efficient with outs, scoring on four sacrifice flies and two ground outs.  Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) and Grayland Fowler (Moore, S.C./Dorman HS) joined Wharton with two hits.  Houston picked up two RBI along with Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS).

Russ Weiker (Albemarle, N.C./S. Stanly HS/Liberty) got the win on the mound with five shutout innings.  He scattered two hits with five strikeouts in improving to 1-0.  Ryan Kahny (High Point, N.C./Central HS) followed with two hitless innings of relief and fanned two.  Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle HS) tossed a hitless eighth with three strikeouts and Will Beeson (Advance, N.C./Davie Co. HS) had three strikeouts in closing the game out.

The Indians return to action on Friday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne for a three-game series.  The teams open up on Friday night at 6 pm with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 pm.
